The Fearsome Fifteen Facts

by Tammy Condren

January 21, 2010

In an effort to help students master their basic math facts, our math teacher, Mrs. Myers has researched and found the 15 most challenging facts for students to learn - "The Fearsome Fifteen."  We are doing a building wide focus on one addition/multiplication fact per day - it is on the morning announcements, in the cafeteria on the TV screens, on posters in the classrooms, and even on stickers some staff wear on their lapel!  After we make it through the entire list - we go back to the top and start over! It's becoming a common occurrence to see a student stopped by a staff member in the hallway and asked - What is 3x9? or What is 9+7? Students are enjoying the challenge and working hard to master their facts.  Why not join the fun? Ask your child the "Fearsome Fifteen Facts" of the Day! (Listed below for your  use! K-2 are working on the addition, 3-5 the multiplication). If your child masters them all, then reverse the fact, or use the opposite math process - for example instead of 9+4=13, ask what is 4+9? Or What is 13-4?  It will help them learn the 'fact families'.

9+4=13           4x7=28
8+4=12           6x9=54
7+5=12           3x7=21
9+5=14           4x8=32
8+5=13           7x8=56
7+6=13           3x8=24
9+6=15           4x9=36
8+6=14           9x7=63
9+7=16           3x9=27
8+7=15           6x7=42
9+8=17           9x8=72
9+3=12           3x4=12
8+3=11           4x6=24
7+4=11           6x8=48
6+5=11           3x6=18
