Weather Make-Up Days

by Eric Kurre

February 05, 2011

We have missed almost a full week for the "Blizzard of 2011".
What will this do to our school calendar?
How many days will we have to make up?

A few years ago the legislature passed 171.033.4, RSMo dealing with inclement weather days.
Below is the law and an explanation of how it works!

171.033.4, RSMo (Missed School Days)

“In the 2009-2010 school year and subsequent years, a school district may be exempt from the requirement to make up days of school lost or canceled due to inclement weather in the school district when the school district has made up the six days required under subsection 2 of this section and half of the number of additional lost or canceled days up to eight days, resulting in no more than ten total make-up days required by this section.”

How it Works:

Under this inclement weather statute a district/charter school would be required to make up the first 6 days of school missed due to inclement weather.  Additionally, there would be a requirement to make up the 7th day missed with the 8th day being forgiven, the 9th day would need to be made up with the 10 being forgiven, the 11th day would need to be made up with the 12th being forgiven and the 13th would need to be made up with the 14th being forgiven.  After the district has made up 10 days there would be no requirement to make up additional days.

For Marion C. Early:

As of February 4th MCE has missed a total of (9) days due to inclement weather.  We have six days built into our calendar (1/17, 2/18, 3/21, 5/19, 5/20, & 5/23).  If we only miss (9) days the last day of classes will be May 25th.  However, if we miss more days due to inclement weather (and we don't miss one of our six scheduled make-up days) our last day of classes will not be after Friday May 27th.

This is an ongoing situation when it warms-up we will send out and post the make-up days and last day of school will be.
